In 1867, when Russian ambassador Baron Eduard de Stoeckl put his signature on the contract for the sale of Alaska, the Russian territory passed into the possession of the U.S. for 7.2 million dollars. Five years later, when gold deposits were found there, Russia realized it had sold its peninsula for a pittance. Furthermore, the American millions never reached the royal treasury, disappearing without a trace.
