Russias Romanov dynasty was cut short in 1918 in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution. The last Russian Emperor, Nicholas II, was executed along with his entire family. For many years, even the place of their burial remained unknown. Conversely, the life of the royal family was richly chronicled in photos and on film, and subsequently preserved in the archives. In fact, the very first film ever made in the Russian Empire was one documenting the coronation of Nicholas II. However, the intimate film reels chronicling the everyday life of the Tsar's family are infinitely more fascinating. The lens of the camera admitted to the inner sanctum of the royal nest was able to capture a happy and affectionate family: the Emperor and Empress doting on each other; their sickly and dearly adored son; and their four daughters, the young tsarinas, each born within a year of the last. In contrast to the incredibly lavish regal quarters they occupied, the members of the royal family come across as surprisingly down-to-earth, unassuming, intelligent people, strikingly different from the stately royal stereotype...
