On May 25th, 1937 Joseph Stalin met with the Soviet pilot and hero, Valery Chkalov, a true daredevil who frequently flew under bridges and power lines. Chkalov’s new feat was to fly non-stop, via the North Pole, from Moscow to Vancouver. Flying the 5284 mile distance was unheard of, but Stalin approved the proposal. Two weeks later, another pilot, Mikhail Gromov, got Stalin’s approval for an even longer journey. It was a universal triumph for both Russian flyers.
