USSR, 1950s. A childless couple adopts a young girl from an orphanage. Soon, they realize she's not an ordinary girl she has psychic abilities. Her powers cause the parents a lot of trouble, and they become increasingly concerned. Unexpectedly, the girl's real mother, also gifted with paranormal powers, reappears after being released from Stalin's labor camps. She wants to take her daughter back, but is refused. The authorities offer to help, but in return, they demand her to work for the intelligence services...
