Every year on February 3, the windows of Novorossiysk are lit with thousands of candles.
This is the memorial action Beskozyrka. It is dedicated to the Black Sea sailors who, in 1943, captured a small area on the southern edge of the city, which was occupied by the German army, a place that is known as Malaya Zemlya (Small Land).
To honour those who died on that cold February night 80 years ago, and all who defended this piece of homeland for 225 days, the people of Novorossiysk place a sailors cap into the sea as a symbol of remembrance and the immortality of fallen heroes.
