At the close of the war with Nazi Germany, a locomotive ferries Russian soldiers east, toward home. But unbeknownst to those aboard, it is headed further, toward a new war with Japan. Among those on the train are lovesick platoon leader Glushkov whose traitorous feelings for his German girlfriend may cost him his life; and Officer Trushin looking to court martial him. Will these former friends bond one last time before war tears them apart yet again?
