"A man and a boat" is a unique documentary project a true ethnographic reality series. Designed as a real-life expedition, it invites viewers to experience the daily life and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Russias Far North.
For thousands of years, Eskimo, Udege, Ulchi, Chukchi and other communities have lived along the shores of cold northern seas. With the boat at the center of their lives, they have passed the craft of building it from generation to generation.
Boat types vary from one community to another: the cargo baidara made from walrus skin, lightweight birchbark boats, the carved wooden omorochka and the ugda, a traditional boat decorated with ornamentation. The documentary captures every stage of their creation, from selecting the right tree or hunting a walrus to launching the boat into the water.
"A man and a boat" is an extraordinary journey through northern heritage that changes the way you see boats forever.
