Thanks to aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, Russia became the first country in the world to possess heavy bombers in the early days of WWI. But soon after the October Revolution of 1917, Sikorsky left his devastated country to pursue work in New York. In 1923, he founded his own aviation company there where he created the first viable American helicopters.
