In March 1917 the Russian Emperor Nicolas II abdicated the throne. The Provisional Government started negotiations with the British authorities on the rescue of the Imperial family and their escape from Russia. The British unexpectedly refused to help, while France had rejected its former ally even earlier, after the February Revolution. The Emperor was doomed.
