It is considered that Stalin was the initiator of the division of Germany into Eastern and Western parts. However, historic facts prove that Stalin considered this division to be his biggest defeat. Few people know that at one time Soviet leaders even tried to give up Eastern Germany, but the Western states had no desire to see a united Germany. Margaret Thatcher was an ardent opponent of a German union. She umderstood that a strong Germany would become a powerful economic rival for Britain. French President Francois Mitterrand and Israel were against the union as well. This film is based on documents from archives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, memoirs of diplomats and officers of the External Intelligence Department, and on rare video recordings.
