RUSSIAN CINEMA MEETS WITH SUCCESS AT EFM 2014 IN BERLIN

15 Feb 2014

From 6 to 14 February, the 64th Berlin International Film Festival hosted a successful European Film Market, one of the world’s largest film forums. Russian cinema at the EFM was presented via the national RUSSIAN CINEMA stand, which brought together Russia Television and Radio’s international distributor SOVTELEXPORT with other major studios.

The RUSSIAN CINEMA stand was organised by the Cinema Fund with support from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and was focused primarily on promoting Russian releases from 2013 and 2014 with the highest international distribution potential.

“This year, the Cinema Fund plans to organise commercial platforms at nine of the world’s largest film markets”, said Executive Director of the Cinema Fund Anton Malyshev. “We have an opportunity to invite all filmmakers who want to promote and sell their content abroad. The main focus of the RUSSIAN CINEMA stand is to help sell Russian films on the global market, and we measure our performance in sales. It is therefore my wish that our companies enjoy increased sales in other countries – where there is serious money to be made – through their concerted and systematic efforts. Our results are measured in the number of deals closed. We are focused on increasing sales of Russian cinema on various markets, and we are ready to offer assistance when needed.”

SOVTELEXPORT has announced preliminary agreements to sign deals with a number of international companies. The US-based VOD platform Digitalia, which specialises in building video libraries for universities such as Harvard and Stanford, plans to purchase a 100-hour catalogue of documentaries and small-screen adaptations of Russian literary classics.
Iranian distributor RO-In Entertainment Limited is interested in buying the distribution rights to the features Back in Time (2008) and Piranha (2006).
Poland’s largest state-owned television network Telewizja Polska (TVP) plans to buy the rights to the miniseries Einstein: The Theory of Love (2013) and a catalogue of Russia Television and Radio documentaries.
Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) is interested in purchasing the series Demons (2014), Einstein: The Theory of Love (2013), and Fyodor Dostoevsky (2011).

The deals are expected to close at the end of the Film Market, once the contracts have been finalised.

The RUSSIAN CINEMA stand at the European Film Market 2014 enjoyed the well-deserved attention of international buyers: proof positive that Russian content is on a par with the highest international film standards.

From 24 to 27 March 2014, Hong Kong will host the 18th Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART), where there will once again be a national RUSSIAN CINEMA stand.
